A fair trade coffee cooperative with a social mission
Fair tradeTrade in products that have been certified and carry a fair trade label. An example of this is a farmer’s cooperative that collectively sells its cocoa to a fair trade organization.
The coffee producer cooperative CADECH, Cooperativa Integral Agrícola Adelante Chanmagua RL was founded in 1976 to support small and medium-scale farmers in the village of Chanmagua. Since 1988 CADECH has been increasingly focusing on the trading and processing of coffee with fair trade and other certification.
The cooperative provides its members with loans for various activities such as coffee harvesting, maintenance, housing and consumption. It also sells agro-inputs. Most associates are experienced coffee producers with more than 15 years of experience. Over the years, they have received training, advice and technical assistance, enabling them to improve the quality of their crops.
The cooperative is one of the main local income providers and offers fair conditions and prices. As a socially oriented institution, CADECH cares about the livelihoods of communities in which it operates and is committed to improving their living conditions. By way of example, a percentage of the profits is allocated to charitable work, social services and cultural activities. The cooperative also provides secondary school scholarships and supports the local school.
CADECH, Cooperativa Integral Agrícola Adelante Chanmagua has been an Oikocredit partner since 2010.Download this project as a PDF
